1 Samuel 16:6-7

  1. Being here is not about joining some strange cult!
    1. Life is a journey with God in pursuit.
  2. Context: What is going on here?
    1. Saul was king, but he did not do things God’s way.
      1. Prideful but frightened.
    2. Samuel is called to anoint another king.
      1. He goes to Bethlehem to see the sons of Jesse.
  3. What is the heart?
    1. What it is not: emotions only.
    2. The center of our being - from it flows the will, our emotions and our choices.
  4. What does God require? What is it to have relationship with God?
    1. Religion vs. Authentic Spirituality (the Gospel).

    2. Give and take relationship with God.
    3. Life of repentance and rest in the Gospel.

1 Corinthians 1:18-31

  1. What am I looking for in everyday life? Perfection!
    1. From myself, others, my family, life
  2. Context: vs. 26 - this is not anti-intellectualism!
    1. Corinthian context: elevation of wisdom
    2. Notice “not many” in 1 Corinthians 1:26
  3. Wordly Wisdom and God’s Wisdom vss. 27-28
    1. Self-sufficiency and financial independence - the “wise” and “strong”.
    2. Community and interdependence - the “weak” and “despised”.
  4. Ultimately more than that! All is in Christ! Vs. 30-31
    1. “By His doing” “Because of Him”
    2. Jesus is everything! Wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.
    3. What we have is the greatest object in the universe: Jesus Christ!
