Freedom, Service, and Gossip

Galatians 5:13-15

1. Easy passage to explain, but hard to live!
   1. Convicting application
2. Principle: Use your freedom to serve others
   1. Converse: use our freedom to serve ourselves: The “Flesh”
   2. We are set free: before we had no choice but to serve ouselves.
      1. We were controlled by the flesh
      2. Dead in sin
   3. Service: Doing and believing what is best for the other
3. Why the believing part? Application in verse 3.
   1. “Biting and devouring each other.” Christian cannibalism. The ruin of many a church and person.
   2. We must actively believe the best of others (like we do of ourselves!). Even in the inner dialog
   3. If we do not, we will be destroyed by each other. There is no love nor can there be love.
4. The problem with the tongue: Proverbs 26:20-28 and James 3:1-12.
   1. Relationship between the heart, the mind, and the tongue.
   2. The cure: direct, honest, and loving speech. Matthew 18:15-17.
