- Easy passage to explain, but hard to live!
- Convicting application
- Principle: Use your freedom to serve others
- Converse: use our freedom to serve ourselves: The “Flesh”
- We are set free: before we had no choice but to serve ouselves.
- We were controlled by the flesh
- Dead in sin
- Service: Doing and believing what is best for the other
- Why the believing part? Application in verse 3.
- “Biting and devouring each other.” Christian cannibalism. The ruin of many a church and person.
- We must actively believe the best of others (like we do of ourselves!). Even in the inner dialog
- If we do not, we will be destroyed by each other. There is no love nor can there be love.
- The problem with the tongue: Proverbs 26:20-28 and James 3:1-12.
- Relationship between the heart, the mind, and the tongue.
- The cure: direct, honest, and loving speech. Matthew 18:15-17.
