The Strength of the “Weak”

Message by Doug Towle

Matthew 5:1-5

The poor in spirit: an attitude and an understanding of spiritual need. Poor here means “completely destitute,” and the poor in spirit know that they are spiritually destitute and humble before God. They are completely dependent on God for salvation.

Those who mourn: those who grieve over sins committed and of inner sinfulness.

The meek: those who are gentle and humble. This humbleness is toward others, and seems to be the result of the knowledge of deep spiritual need, dependency on God, and understanding of the inner struggle against sin.

Paul was the greatest Apostle

  • Missionary journeys
  • Founded many churches
  • Wrote half of the New Testament
  • A “Super-Apostle”!

Paul’s Weaknesses

  • He had physical ailments
  • Probable eye problems
  • A mysterious “thorn in the flesh”
  • Probably not a very good speaker by the standards of the day

How did Paul see himself? He understood his struggle and his need. Romans 7:14-25

What did this lead Paul to do? 1 Corinthians 9:11-12
