Acts 17:16-34

  1. Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion; Sam Harris, The End of Faith.
    1. A second shot at clarity!
    2. What is Proof? What is the standard for proof?
      1. A plea for rational probability as the standard.
      2. Balance our dignity as rational humans with our weakness because we are fallen.
  2. How do we witness effectively?
    1. Finding common ground. Acts 17:16-21.
    2. Paul had to be willing to bring “strange ideas” to the table.
    3. He addressed the real questions of the day.
      1. Thus the philosophers!
      2. All humans are religious. Acts 17:22-23.
  3. Appeal to Creation. Acts 17:24-29.
    1. Beauty, order, beginning, ethics, reason, etc. All are found in creation.
    2. Each of these areas form a basis for presenting the gospel.
  4. Reality of Christ changes everything. Acts 17:29-31.
    1. Paul brings the message to repentance and faith.
    2. About what? Jesus and the resurrection.
      1. The Spirit shows up when we talk about Jesus.
  5. Responses. Acts 17:32-34.
    1. Always will be mixed. Why? The results of the fall.
    2. Leave the results up to God!
