Sermon by Dean Romprey
- The conext of Psalm 51
- It is one of seven Psalms of confession (6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, 143)
- This Psalm was written by David
- What happened?
- Who was involved?
- Why did David write this Psalm?
- Prayer for individual restoration (vss. 1-2)
- When in desperate need of forgiveness, all a sinner can do is seek God’s mercy. The Psalmist seeks the Lord’s love and compassion.
- Mercy is an act of God’s grace. The ritual washings and Old Testament sacrifices symbolize the removal of sin and the renewal of fellowship with God.
- Confession and Contrition
- The Psalmist open his heart to God and acknowledges his sin. David is fully aware of his condition before God. He has a contrite heart.
- David admits that he did wrong and he admits that he is in need of God.
Conclusion: The Gospel is shown here in Psalm 51 . . . . How do we apply this gospel to our own lives?
